Plastic kite strings banned till April 23
Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg has imposed a ban on the sale of plastic kite strings which are imported from China. The ban will be in force till April 23 this year. The order has been passed following the death of a 6-year-old Suraj in Khanna who died after his neck got entangled in the kite string.
However,it needs to be mentioned that for the past two years,animal welfare organisations and NGOs had been asking for the imposition of a ban as they were proving to be dangerous for animals and as well as birds.

MC shops for seven garbage-lifting machines
SEVEN new garbage-lifting vehicles were purchased by the Municipal Corporation at a cost of Rs 70 lakh today. These have added to the existing fleet of 27 machines. The machines would be employed to remove filth lying along the banks of the Buddha Nallah. Meanwhile,the MC plans to purchase 19 new machines and has allocated Rs 3 crore for the purpose.
It needs to be mentioned that the Buddha Nallah cleanliness drive was carried out in monsoons and after that filth was not removed from the banks. Commissioner A K Sinha said,“This will reduce the time of garbage lying at the dump sites and hence the city will give a clean look. In the next phase about 9 more machines will be purchased and the remaining will come in the third phase.”

15 illegal structures demolished
The MC team demolished 15 illegal structures in Kareempura and Saban Bazar today. In the Kareempura market,shopkeepers have sought breather till March 8. They promised to clear encroachments on their own. Meanwhile,the MC team will go to Feroze Gandhi market on Thursday.

CIPHET scientist gets young scientist award
Dr Dattatreya M Kadam,senior scientist at Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET),Ludhiana,has received Young Scientist Award 2010 during the 12th Indian Agricultural Scientists and Farmers Congress from Boived Research Society held at Allahabad for his contribution in agricultural structures and processing on February 20 and 21. He is also a recipient of The Young Engineer Award-2008” from The Institution of Engineers ( India ),Kolkata,for patent entitled “CIPHET Manual Banana-Comb/ Hand Cutter,” the technology of which was transferred to National Agro Industries,Ludhiana.

Winter school concludes at PAU
A three-week winter school on ‘Architectural Engineering of Vegetable Crops and their Management’ that began on February 2 concluded at PAU Regional Director of the Hyderabad-based Centre of Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centre (AVRDC). Dr Madan Lal Chadha presided over the concluding function organised in the Department of Vegetable Crops,PAU.
The winter school had 24 participants from various states of the country. PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang released a souvenir of the programme as well as a CD of lectures delivered to participants during the course.

Sandhu is ICAR assistant director general
Working as a senior scientist (Pulses) at Punjab Agricultural University,Dr Jeet Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the Assistant Director General (Seed) at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for five years. He will be placed at ICAR Headquarters,New Delhi. Dr Sandhu has served at Punjab Agricultural University in various capacities since December 1986 and has been involved in research on pulse crops. Dr. Sandhu worked on inducing disease resistance and broadening of the genetic base of cultivated species of chickpea and has contributed in the development of 17 high yielding and disease resistance varieties of chickpea,moongbean,arhar and soybean which have been well accepted by the farmers.
