Conceptualised and planned on social networking site Facebook by some Ludhiana residents and NGOs,project Green Life,Clean Life began on Saturday with volunteers coming on to the streets of Model Town and cleaning it.
Ludhiana Cares,a group of NGOs that shares and initiates similar ideas on Facebook, conducted its first cleanliness drive on Saturday from Gulati road to Dugri junction.
Adorned in T-shirts of Ludhiana Cares, more than 30 people from all age groups and volunteers from NGO RBS Roots apprised people about the importance of greenery and cleaned the streets. Residents, too, joined hands.
Ranbir Singh, president of Model Town Welfare Association, said,It was a first-of-its-kind experience. Now,it will be done in our area, every Saturday morning.
The NGO volunteers told residents about the seven point agenda, which was necessary to keep the area clean. Amandeep Singh Bains from NGO RBS Roots said,Green Life,Clean Life that began on Facebook has turned into a reality. We advised people to maintain green grass outside their homes to help recharge ground water. Burning garbage with tree leaves was found to be a major problem. We also told them to have tree houses to encourage birds. We picked garbage from streets and people helped us.
Next week,we will carry on the drive in another area and will also sensitise residents about the importance of using buckets, instead of hose pipes to wash cars, said Harpreet Soin, one of the managers of Ludhiana Cares.
