Despite protests,MC fails to remove liquor kiosk from green belt

Although BRS Nagar residents had objected to the opening of a liquor kiosk in the green belt near Lodhi Club and despite assurances by the MC Commissioner, nothing has been done till date.

The residents had complained to MC Commissioner G S Ghuman, who had promised to remove the vend by April 1,but to no avail.

Inderjit Singh Pappu, one of the residents, said,”The yearly contract of the liquor vends ended on March 31. Hence,we were expecting that the contract of the shop would not be renewed. But the kiosk is back. It seems that the MC is in no mood to relocate the shop.”

He added,”More than 500 people had complained to the MC Commissioner in writing to shift the kiosk, because apart from spoiling the green belt, the kiosk is also causing traffic hazards on the main road.”

It seems that the MC chooses to earn Rs 3 lakh per annum from the kiosk on the roadside which actually is a green belt.

Ramesh Chhabra,Assistant Town Planner, said,”We are waiting for the formal written orders because the kiosk stocks liquor inside and hence we want to have all papers with us ready before going in for a demolition drive.”

Chhabra added,”On April 1,the MC team had visited the site and given a warning to the owner that he will be held responsible for any damage if he does not vacate the site. So our team will be going for demolition to the site within a few days after formal written orders.”
