In an incident that can land the Ludhiana police in a soup,11-year-old Vikram, who was arrested for mobile theft on April 7,was nowhere to be found on Friday. Now,while his family wants Vikram back, the police claim he had escaped from custody the very next day, that is on April 8.

According to the law,a minor cannot be kept in a police station. He/she has to be sent to juvenile home immediately. But Vikram was kept in the Division number 4 police station for almost a day before he went missing, the family said. Moreover,it is being questioned how a child can run away from a heavily-guarded police station.

To top it all,SHO Dilpreet Singh says he never knew there was a child inside the police station. Meanwhile,Rudal Rai,father of the missing child, along with residents of Shivpuri, held a massive protest dharna outside the police station this morning. Rai said,“My son had come to Ludhiana just a month ago to learn tailoring. He was working as an apprentice and used to live in a rented place along with one Hari Ram. Ram lost his mobile and blamed my son for the theft. He,along with the room’s owner, beat my son brutally and handed him over to the police on April 7. ASI Karnal Singh brought my son to the police station.”

Rai,who works in Jagadhri,Haryana, added,“I spoke to my son and he pleaded innocence. Meanwhile, the ustaad (contractor),who was teaching my son, intervened in the case and a compromise was struck. According to that,my son was to pay Rs 5,000 for his release. We had agreed to that. But now we are being told that my son is missing.”

Police Commissioner Ishwar Singh said,“I have asked ADCP Harsh Kumar Bansal to investigate the case. We have put the ASI under suspension, for there has been a procedural lapse. He should have lodged an FIR against the boy. At the same time, the party whose mobile was allegedly picked up by the boy claims that Vikram is with his family and they were creating a scene so that they don’t have to pay Rs 5,000. We are investigating the case and will recover the boy soon.”
