The Fatehpur police on Saturday arrested a youth on charges of murdering his mother. The accused allegedly killed his mother as she was pressurising him to return the jewellery, which he had stolen from home to pay off his online gaming debts.

The deceased has been identified as Prabha Devi, 50, a resident of Adhauli village in UP’s Fatehpur district. The body of the victim was recovered near the bank of River Yamuna – six kilometre from her house.

On Saturday, the accused, Himanshu Singh, 21, was produced before a local court in Fatehpur and sent to judicial custody.

According to complainant Roshan Singh, the husband of the victim, he did not find his wife at home when he returned from Chitrakoot district on Tuesday. Thereafter, his son, Himanshu Singh, told him that Prabha Devi had gone to her brother’s house in the morning. When Prabha Devi did not return home by evening, Roshan Singh went to his in-laws’ place but was informed that Prabha Devi had not visited them. After returning home, Roshan Singh found Himanshu Singh missing along with his belongings.

Suspecting some foul play, Roshan Singh went to the local police station and filed a missing complaint for his wife.

Meanwhile, the police found a woman’s body stuffed inside a bag near the banks of River Yamuna. The victim was identified as Prabha Devi.

“Himanshu was under a debt of around Rs 4 lakh and had borrowed money from his friends. In an attempt to return the borrowed sum, Himanshu stole jewellery kept in his house and sold it,” said a police officer.

“The stolen jewellery belongs to Roshan Singh’s elder brother, Lal Singh, who stays in Prayagraj. Lal Singh had entrusted his jewellery to Roshan Singh a few months ago due to fear of theft. In the first week of this month, when Roshan Singh and Prabha Devi checked the jewellery, they discovered it was missing. When questioned, Himanshu claimed to have sold the jewellery to repay his debts,” said Dhata Station House Officer Brindavan Rai.

The accused also mortgaged a few pieces of jewellery at a shop. The couple had been asking Himanshu Singh to recover the mortgaged jewellery ever since they came to know about his actions.

The police said Himanshu Singh confessed to the crime during interrogation. He told them he strangled his mother to death owing to mounting pressure from her to return the jewellery.
