Villagers attacked a police party and freed a local youth,Zeeshan, who was being taken for questioning in a murder case in Mansa Chapra village in Kushinagar district on Sunday evening. The villagers pelted stones and also fired on the police.
The police said the villagers attacked the police team after family members of Zeeshan raised an alarm that dacoits in police uniform had attacked their house. Four policemen suffered minor injuries.
Extra police force was rushed to defuse the situation. By then,Zeeshan and his family members had escaped. An FIR was lodged against Zeeshan and his two brothers,Rajan and Uma,on various charges, including attempt to murder.
Harish Chand,Inspector at Jatahabazar police station, said they wanted to question Zeeshan in connection with the murder of Ram Lochan, whose bullet- ridden body was found in a field on April 26.
During the course of investigation, the police came to know that Anand,Ram Lochans son from his first wife Jigma Devi, had developed enmity with his father over distribution of property. The police also got to know that Anand was a friend of Zeeshan, and he had a role in the murder.
Anand, who was a habitual drinker, was let off after questioning. The police also wanted to question Zeeshan and had sent a constable to his house several times, but he never turned up.
Finally,a police team, led by Sub-Inspector BB Mishra, went to Zeeshans house. On seeing the police,Zeeshan opened fire from the rooftop and tried to escape, but was caught. His family then raised an alarm and attacked the police.
