A national veterinary museum will be established at Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI),Izatnagar,Bareilly. Speaking on the eighth IVRI convocation,Dr S Ayyappan,Director General,Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) and Secretary,Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE),announced a grant of Rs 15 crore for the establishment of the museum and modernisation of existing IVRI facilities.
IVRI spokesperson Kundan Singh said IVRIs existing facility of documenting institutes heritage,which has been running for three years,would be also upgraded in this direction.
Dr Ramesh Somvanshi,a veterinary historian and scientist at IVRI,said the museum would be the first of its kind in India compared to a smaller one in Chennai.
Dr Ramesh also said the institute has a collection of old journals,manuscripts,coins,etc. dating back to 18th century. The institute,which was founded in 1889 in Pune,shifted to Mukteshwar,Nainital in 1893 and finally to Bareilly in 1901. The institute has photographs like that of Nobel laureate Robert Kochs visit around 1895.
