Two cousins, aged 17 and 15 years, were allegedly gang-raped by six men in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district while returning home from a fair late on Sunday. The men and the girls are from neighbouring villages and a backward community.
Superintendent of police Rajesh Kumar Singh said all the six men had been taken into custody. Another police officer said the cousins had identified the six accused men, aged 19 to 24, during an identification parade.
Police said the two girls had gone to the fair around 5 km away from their village along with two other children—a 12-year-old girl and her 10-year-old brother. “Since it was late, they decided to stay at their relative’s house, which is around 2 km from the fair. They called up their cousin and asked him to come to the fair to pick them up. After waiting for him for a few minutes, the children started walking towards their relative’s house,” said a police officer.
“They had covered around one kilometre when six youths came from behind and caught them. They dragged the 17- and 15- year-old cousins to nearby bushes and gang-raped them,” added the police officer.
The officer said the men had thrashed the youngest girl and the boy when they raised the alarm, but let all of them go later.
Police said they had sent the two girls for a medical examination, the report of which is still awaited.
