Ahead of the urban local body elections in Uttar Prades, BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday asked her party leaders to put on hold the ongoing organisational programmes like ‘Gaaon Chalo Abhiyan” and instead focus on the upcoming civic body elections. According to sources in the BSP, the party is going to restart the screening of candidates for the local body polls according to the changes made in the latest draft notification on the reservation of seats in local bodies.

Following the Supreme Court giving a go-ahead to the UP State Election Commission to hold the urban local body polls with reservation for Other Backward Class (OBCs), the state government on Thursday issued a draft notification listing the reserved seats for the three-tier civic body.

Out of the 17 posts of Mayor, 199 of chairpersons of Nagar Palika Parishad and 534 Nagar Panchayats – which add up to 760 total seats – 205 posts have been reserved for OBCs, 288 for women of all categories, 110 for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and two for Scheduled Tribes (STs), according to the new notification.

BSP sources said the party might not give a ticket to Shaista Parveen, the wife of jailed former MP Atiq Ahmed, for the mayoral elections in Prayagraj. Shaista joined the BSP on January 5. The party had planned to field her for Prayagraj mayor post. However, a formal announcement about her candidature was put on hold when the local body polls were delayed to complete the exercise of the OBC survey for reservation.

After the recent killing of Umesh Pal — a key witness in the murder case of former BSP MLA Raju Pal — Mayawati promised to expel Shaista, who has been named in the murder FIR along with Atiq and his brother Ashraf, from the BSP if she was found guilty. When asked about the possible candidature of Parveen, BSP state president Vishwanath Pal, “Nobody in the party is speaking about Shaista Parveen.”
