A 35-year-old man was arrested in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur for allegedly beating his ailing wife to death after she defecated on the bed at their house in New Sharda Nagar locality late Thursday evening, the police said. The woman had been bedridden for the last two months.

The police identified the husband as Sandeep Kumar and said that he claimed that he had no intention of killing his wife Alka and that what happened was the outcome of a fit of fury.

Kumar and Alka got married 10 years ago but they did not have children. This was a bone of contention between them as Kumar allegedly blamed Alka for not being able to become a father, the police said.

“The First Information Report (FIR) was lodged by her brother Alok (32) who alleged that Sandeep Kumar was unemployed for the last few years and his sister used to frequently ask him to find jobs but instead he started ill-treating her for the last two years as the couple had no children. Sandeep has been arrested and Alka’s body will be handed over to the family members after the post-mortem examination,” said Chandrasen Saini, the in-charge of Qutubsher police station in Saharanpur.

The police said that Alka had been very ill for the last two months and the family had been finding it hard to meet the medical expenses because Kumar had been unemployed for the last two years. “There were many factors behind the murder,” said Saini.
