Minutes before he was shot dead in his field, a 38-year-old farmer in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur purportedly filmed a 27 second-long video — capturing the moments leading to the alleged incident.

The incident took place on Wednesday following a dispute over farmland. Police said the family discovered the video on the mobile phone of the victim, Arvesh Yadav, and shared it with them.

The footage, which is doing the rounds on social media, purportedly shows a man pulling out a firearm that had been tucked into the waistband of his pants and allegedly opening fire. The victim, according to his family, was secretly filming on his phone when the accused shot him.

Police said three people have been named in the FIR: Kallu, who is purportedly seen in the video firing the shot; his younger brother, Sonu; and an unidentified person. They have been booked for murder. Police have launched search operations at multiple locations to trace and apprehend the accused.

Ashok Kumar Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Paraur police station, said the video recovered from the victim’s phone is a key piece of evidence in the case and that an in-depth investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events.

Arvesh was a resident of Usawa village in Badaun district. He is survived by his wife and five children.

Recounting the events of Wednesday afternoon, Arvesh’s elder brother, Dharmendra Yadav, said he, Arvesh and their third brother, Ramveer, were working on their field when they noticed that Kallu and Sonu — whose field is adjacent to theirs — dismantling the boundary wall that separated the two properties.

When the Yadav brothers objected to this, Kallu and Sonu allegedly began hurling abuses at them and, after issuing threats, left the spot.

Around 3 pm, Kallu and Sonu returned to the field. They were accompanied by a man, who remained standing about 500 metres away. At that time, Arvesh was seated near the tubewell, roughly 70 metres from where Dharmendra and Ramveer were working.

Dharmendra alleged that Kallu and Sonu once again began abusing Arvesh but he refused to respond to their provocations. Enraged, Kallu pulled out a pistol that was tucked into his waistband and allegedly opened fire at Arvesh.

Hearing the sound of gunfire, Dharmendra and Ramveer immediately rushed towards Arvesh. Seeing them approach, Kallu, Sonu, and their unidentified accomplice fled from the scene. The bullet had struck Arvesh in the chest. His brothers, along with other locals, quickly took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“When Kallu and Sonu were walking toward Arvesh, he was sitting near the tubewell, watching reels on his phone. Sensing tension, he seems to have discreetly turned on the video recorder to film the incident. But Kallu pulled out his weapon and fired. Arvesh collapsed, his phone still clutched in his hand…,” claimed Dharmendra.

He said the family had no idea that the shooting had been captured on video. “It was only the next day, after completing all police formalities, that we charged Arvesh’s phone and found the video in it. We immediately informed the police,” he said.
