In a significant political development, Chandra Prakash Rai, who was previously associated with Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, along with former BJP MLA Rakesh Rathore and their respective supporters, officially joined the Congress here on Thursday in the presence of AICC secretary Pradeep Narwal, state president Brij Lal Khabri, and other senior leaders.
During his address at the event, Rai, a former teacher and a founder member of the SP, said that throughout his life, he had always identified as a socialist, but the Samajwadi Party no longer upholds the principles of socialism.
Sources, however, said feeling sidelined in the party, Rai was discontent.
In his remarks, Rathore, former MLA from Sitapur, alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has deviated from its roots as a party that prioritises the interests of the underprivileged and that he believes leaders such as Rahul Gandhi are crucial in preserving the integrity of the Constitution.
Welcoming Rai and Rathore to the party fold, Khabri criticised the BJP government for its alleged failure to effectively maintain law and order in the state.
Pointing to the recent court shootout incident, Khabri highlighted that criminals have become emboldened and fearless, committing crimes even in the presence of police.
