Day after Diwali, air quality worsens in Lucknow and Kanpur

Cities like Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Kanpur saw their levels go from ‘moderate’ to ‘poor’

A day after Diwali celebrations, several cities in Uttar Pradesh such as Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Kanpur saw a sharp spike in the Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. Ghaziabad, Noida and Meerut, meanwhile, continued to report a higher AQI.

According to the 24-hour daily report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Lucknow’s Air Quality Index (AQI) rose from 144 — considered ‘moderate’ — in the 4 pm report released on October 20 to 250 — ‘poor’ — in the 4 pm report on October 21, following Diwali.

Gorakhpur reported a sudden deterioration in the air quality — from an AQI of 127 on October 20 to an AQI of 280 on October 21.

While neighbouring Kanpur also witnessed a dip in air quality from 194 to 229, cities that were in red included Ghaziabad, Noida and Hapur.

Ghaziabad witnessed ‘very poor’ air quality of 324 on Tuesday, slightly higher than the AQI of 316 the day before. Similarly, Noida also reported ‘very poor’ AQI of 325 on Tuesday. On Monday, its AQI was 320, as per the CPCB report.

Hapur also reported a 314 AQI in the past 24 hours till 4 pm on October 21.

Western UP districts like Meerut also continued to report a high AQI of 280 on Tuesday, up from 260 AQI a day before.

According to experts, a poor AQI between 201 to 300 leads to breathing discomfort in most people on prolonged exposure. ‘Very poor’ AQI, between 301 and 400, might lead to respiratory illness on prolonged exposure.
