After two days of protest by women employees of Uttar Pradesh ‘Dial 112’ demanding salary hike, Lucknow Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against them for rioting. The UP government, meanwhile, replaced Additional Director General (UP-112) Ashok Kumar Singh with Neera Rawat.

“An FIR has been registered against five named people and 150-200 unidentified women protesters on a complaint of Sub-Inspector Dhirendra Pratap Singh. No one has been arrested so far. We are identifying the accused through video clips of the incident that are doing the rounds on social media,” said a police officer.

The protest by women contractual employees of Dial 112 began on Monday near its headquarters in Lucknow. On Tuesday, they tried to block the roads when police allegedly used force to remove them. Police said the people were staging protests despite prohibitory orders, under section 144 of the CrPC being in place here.

“As the protests began, senior police officers reached the spot. They called women sub-inspectors and constables on the spot… Later, the women protesters blocked the road leading to Ahmamau from their 112 headquarters. The traffic was left out of gear and was diverted to the other side.  An additional police force was called to the spot. The next day, agitators tried to move towards Arjunganj area to block the road. The police detained them and later sent them to Eco garden,” said a police officer.

Rejecting the charges of women protesters, DCP (Lucknow) Vineet Jaiswal and said no force was used.

The FIR has been registered under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 283 (danger or obstruction), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), said a

police officer.

The women workers, who are communication specialists at UP 112, were expressing their anger over the issue of job loss due to changing outsourcing companies. They said they have been working for the same salary for a long time and have not given appointment letters, an official said.

“ Our two prime demands are – salary hike from Rs 11,800 to Rs 18,000; and appointment letters,” said a woman protester.

In 2019, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Tuesday launched an all-in-one, pan-India emergency number — 112 accessible through panic buttons in mobiles. The Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) was launched aimed at helping those in distress, especially women, and sending out distress signals and their location details to the nearest police control room by pressing a button on their phones.
