A resident of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh allegedly hammered his grandmother and aunt to death at their home in the Adarsh Nagar area Friday morning following a dispute over money. He later surrendered before the Civil Lines police and was arrested.
The police said the accused, Sahil Sharma alias Sonu, 31, was raised by the deceased women after his parents died two decades ago.
According to investigators, Sahil repeatedly hit Saroj Sharma, 90, and his unmarried aunt Vandana Sharma, 60, on their heads till they succumbed. He then locked the house and went to Bareilly where he told his cousin sister and her husband about the murders. They convinced him to surrender before the police and took him back to Moradabad on Friday evening.
The police said that as per the relatives, the accused had long been demanding money to buy an autorickshaw but the two women had refused because they knew that he was not mentally sound.
Manish Saxena, Station House Officer (SHO), Civil Lines police station, said they were taken aback when Sahil confessed to killing the women who had cared for him from a very young age. “They had a dispute late Thursday night which was confirmed by neighbours who heard loud noises from the house. On Friday morning, he first attacked his aunt while she was asleep and when his grandmother rushed to rescue her, she too was assaulted. Both died on the spot,” he added.
“We took him to the house from where the two bodies were recovered. We also recovered the murder weapon which was a blood-soaked hammer,” the SHO said.
