The principal and an assistant teacher of a government primary school were arrested on Thursday in Patehara block of Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur district for allegedly siphoning off Mid-Day Meal scheme ration.

Shyam Bahadur Yadav (35), the principal, and assistant teacher Surya Kant Tiwari (32) have been booked under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sant Nagar police station.

The irregularity came to light during an investigation into an alleged theft of ration and utensils reported by Tiwari on January 3.

Tiwari claimed that 23 bags of wheat and 21 bags of rice received from a fair price shop on December 23 were stolen from the school premises at Amohipur village.

An FIR was registered in this connection against unidentified persons under Sections 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc) and 457 (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) of the IPC.

Suspicion arose during the investigation after discrepancies were found between Tiwari’s account and the details obtained from the fair shop and the owner of the vehicle in which the ration was supposedly transported.

The vehicle owner denied having delivered the ration to the school and the ration was recovered from a local resident’s premises.

The police said the principal and the assistant teacher deliberately kept the ration there with the likely intention of misusing it.

Mirzapur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Om Prakash Singh said, “We have revised the FIR and initiated appropriate legal action against the two accused.”
