A group of youths fired indiscriminately at jailed don Brijesh Singhs close aide Ajay Khalnayak and his wife in Cantonment area on Saturday evening.
Additional DG (ADG) Law and Order Arun Kumar said Ajay and his wife have suffered bullet injuries and have been admitted in hospital.
Special task force has been handed over the probe in for investigation. The police have found 11 empty shells of 7.62 bore firearm from the spot,he added.
He also said rivalry between Brijesh Singh and his rival gangs appeared to be the reason behind the shootout.
Varanasi Range DIG A Satish Ganesh said Ajay belongs to Dhanapur area of Chandauli district and is a zila panchayat member there.
Varanasi SSP Ajay Kumar Mishra said Ajay is a history-sheeter of Chandauli and has 10 criminal cases,including those of murder and Gangster Act,against him.
