The Director of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Professor Sudhir K Jain, has been appointed the new vice-chancellor (V-C) of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
In an order dated November 13 received by the registrar of BHU, the Ministry of Education said Jain was being appointed for a term of three years from the day he attains office, or till he turns 70 years old.
Jain, 62, told The Indian Express on Sunday evening that he would try to create an atmosphere of efficiency and inspiration at the university during his tenure as V-C.
“There are some basic principles for running any education institute. They remain the same whether you run a university or an IIT. One of the principles is that you bring top talent – high-quality students, staff, teachers. Second is that you give opportunities, funding, facilities and infrastructure. Third is that you create an atmosphere where people are able to function efficiently, people get inspired and encourage each other. The scale might be different, but these principles are the same at every educational institute,” he said.
Jain is a civil engineer by qualification and has been the director of IIT Gandhinagar since 2009. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 for distinguished service in the field of Science and Engineering.
