Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel has advised girls to stay away from live-in relationships, saying that the consequences of such relations can be seen in orphanages where young girls can be seen with babies in their arms.

Patel made the remark while addressing students of Jananayak Chandrashekhar University in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district at a convocation ceremony on Tuesday.

“Betiyon ko meri ek hi salaah hai. Aapke paas koi ayega friendship karne ke liye. Aur aaj kal yehi chalta hai. Live-in relation; Kya hai live-in relation? Ja kar dekhiye. Anathalya ja kar dekhiye. Live-in relation ka parinaam kya hai…wahan aapko ja kar dikhayi padega. 15 saal ki betiyan, 20 saal ki betiyan ek ek saal ka bachcha le kar wahan khadi hain (I have one advice for daughters. Someone would come up to you seeking friendship. This is common these days. Live-in relation: What is live-in relation? Go and see. Go and see in the orphanages. What is the result of live-in relations…there you can see. Fifteen and 20-year-old daughters are standing, carrying one-year-old babies),” Patel said in her address.

Continuing her address, Patel cautioned young women to stay away from live-in relationships, stating that neither parents nor in-laws would offer support in such situations. She also urged girls to focus their energies on more purposeful pursuits.

According to information shared by the Raj Bhavan, 19,560 degrees were conferred by Patel, who is also the chancellor of state universities, during the ceremony. Of these, 12,143 degrees were granted to women and 7,417 to men. Of the 44 gold medals presented, women claimed 35.

Expressing concern over the increasing use of drugs among youth, Patel said that the Centre runs drug eradication campaigns, but the youth are influenced by narcotics.

She asked the students to ensure 75 per cent attendance in their classes, warning that she would cancel the exam if this mark was not met. She emphasised making the teaching environment better in the university, and asked teachers to promote the culture of research-based studies. The state government, she said, has been making consistent efforts to promote research works, and universities should also remain active in this regard.
