Six children among 11 killed as SUV falls into canal in UP

The victims were on their way to offer prayers at the Prithvinath temple in Khargupur when the accident happened

Eleven people – including six minors – lost their lives after the SUV they were travelling in overturned and fell into the Saryu canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district on Sunday morning. Four others sustained injuries in the accident.

The police said the victims – all residents of Sihagwan village in Gonda district – were on their way to offer prayers at the Prithvinath temple in Khargupur when their vehicle allegedly veered off the road and plunged into the canal.

The injured are reported to be in critical condition and are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the deceased. The victims of the accident belonged to two families.

The bodies recovered from the canal have been sent for postmortem. Krishn Gopal Rai, Station House Officer (SHO), Itiathok police station, said the identities of the victims are being verified.

According to sources, victims’ families have claimed that a total of 16 people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The police are trying to confirm this and are conducting a search operation to trace the missing person.

They informed that the vehicle will be sent for a technical examination to help determine the cause of the accident after being pulled out of the canal.
