Former Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma on Tuesday filed his nomination as BJP candidate for the by-election to a Rajya Sabha seat from the state.
With no other candidate filing papers on Tuesday, the last day of nominations, Sharma is set to be elected to the upper House of Parliament unopposed.
The bypoll from the seat was necessitated by the death of BJP’s Rajya Sabha member Hardwar Dubey whose term was to end in November 2026. The scrutiny of papers will take place on Wednesday, while the official announcement will be made on Friday. Sharma was accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Ministers Brijesh Pathak and Keshav Prasad Maurya during the filing of papers.
Addressing BJP office-bearers and workers at the party office before filing nomination papers, CM Adityanath said Sharma has fulfilled responsibilities in various posts within the party and it shows that the party leadership has given respect to a dedicated worker.
Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior party leadership for his selection, the CM said, “He has associated himself with the ideology of Pandit Deen Daya Upadhaya as well as Atal (Bihari Vajpayee) ji.. A dedicated worker has been honoured.”
Soon after filing his nomination papers, Sharma thanked the party leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and claimed that the party workers are working to take the country to a golden era and get Modi elected to Parliament for the third time in 2024.
“I am thankful to them that on Teacher’s Day, they decided to send me, a teacher, to the Rajya Sabha,” he said.
