Dalit woman jailed for 3 years for filing false assault case

A Dalit woman was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment by a local court in Jalaun district on Thursday for filing a false case of assault and making unfounded allegations under SC/ST Act. The woman, Savitri Devi, was later granted bail.

The court had also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 or a month’s jail if she fails to deposit the money.

The case was lodged on Savitri’s complaint with the Aata police station in Jalaun on September 22, 2012 against Prema Devi and others under various IPC sections and SC/ST Act.

The case was investigated by then Circle Officer of Kalpi area, Omkar Yadav who later filed a closure report in the case in December same year after finding the allegations false.

Senior Prosecuting Officer (SPO), Jalaun, Virendra Kumar said the court had summoned the complainant Savitri to know if she was convinced with the police closure report. She submitted before the court bench that she had no objection with the report as she was asked to put her thumb impression on the complaint by some people and had no connection with the allegations made against the accused persons, the SPO added.

Following her statement, the court ordered initiatiation of legal action against Savitri for lodging a false case and after conducting a trial sentenced her to three months imprisonment, said assistant prosecution officer C M Gupta.
