Court rejects police plea for ex-CMO statement

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Intakhab Alam on Friday turned down the application filed by the police to record the statement of former Chief Medical Officer of Lucknow AK Shukla who was arrested earlier this week in connection with the murder of CMO Dr B P Singh.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Intakhab Alam on Friday turned down the application filed by the police to record the statement of former Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Lucknow AK Shukla who was arrested earlier this week in connection with the murder of CMO Dr B P Singh.

Investigation Officer S Rahim said,“I had requested that Shukla’s statement be recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC. The court rejected the application saying that Dr Shukla is an educated man and if he wants his statement to be recorded by the court, let him apply for the same.”

Shukla was named, along with Deputy CMO YS Sachan,in an FIR lodged on April 7,a week after the killing of CMO Dr BP Singh. While Sachan was arrested, the police had not arrested Shukla in the case for more than three months.

On July 12,the police arrested Shukla in Lucknow and tried to file a charge sheet within 24 hours of his arrest. The ACJM had returned the chargesheet and case diary filed by the police in the case on Thursday, asking the IO to first complete the investigation.

Meanwhile, the police recorded the statement of Sandeep Mehrotra,a witness in the case,on Friday.
