A court in Mau today issued a non-bailable warrant against actor Sanjay Dutt for not appearing before it despite several summons and a bailable warrant for allegedly making provocative remarks at a rally for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
Judicial magistrate Krishna Kumar also issued summons to co-accused Arshad Jamal, who was a Samajwadi Party candidate, and fixed the next hearing for July 8.
The court said that if the report of serving the summons is not submitted at the next hearing, action would be taken against the officer deployed for the purpose.
Dutts lawyer Kunwar Siddharth Singh said that the court summoned Dutt after the charge-sheet was filed, but we filed a revision application in the court of the district judge, which is pending and the next date for hearing is June 10.
The case dates back to April 2009,when Dutt was national general secretary of the Samajwadi Party. While campaigning for Arshad,Dutt allegedly said he was booked under TADA and tortured after the 1993 Bombay serial blasts as he was the son of a Muslim (actress Nargis).
The police lodged an FIR against Dutt and Jamal and filed a charge-sheet in the court. When the actor did not appear despite repeated summons,a bailable warrant was issued against him on March 26. However, the actor still did not appear in court.
