The Union Health Ministry has approved the commencement of MBBS course at five new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, the number of seats at the medical colleges in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur has been increased from 50 to 100.
With this, 600 more MBBS seats have been added, bringing the total number of new MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25 to 1,200. The total number of MBBS seats in UP has reached 11,200 — 5,150 seats in government medical colleges and 6,050 seats in private medical colleges.
Earlier, seven new medical colleges in the state had been recognised, with MBBS programmes approved for 100 seats each in five of these colleges, and 50 seats each in Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur Medical Colleges.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held talks with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, after which the principals of the colleges filed an appeal with the National Medical Commission (NMC). This has led to the recognition of the seven medical colleges.
DG Medical Education, Kinjal Singh, said, “The department recently submitted an appeal to the Union Health Ministry requesting approval for 100 MBBS seats at autonomous state medical colleges in Auraiya, Chandauli, Gonda, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Kaushambi. We also sought permission to increase the MBBS seats from 50 to 100 at Kanpur Dehat and Lalitpur. As a result, the ministry has granted approval for 100 MBBS seats at all these medical colleges.”
