A case was registered against Rakhi Sawant — the host of the television show Rakhi ka Insaaf — and others in Jhansi district’s Prem Nagar police station on Friday for allegedly humiliating a participant and later causing his death.

The ADG (Law and Order),Brij Lal,said that one Savitri — a resident of Prem Nagar in Jhansi — had lodged a complaint that her son Lakshman and his wife Anita were called to attend the show aired on October 23. Sawant humiliated Lakshman by publicly making objectionable remarks against him during the show, she added.

According to Savitri,Lakshman could not bear the humiliation and fell seriously ill after he returned home. His condition deteriorated and he was admitted to the Jhansi Medical College on November 9. He died the next day.

Savitri had held Sawant, her bodyguards, unidentified videographer of the show and others responsible for her son’s death. A case has been registered under IPC sections 120-B (punishment of criminal conspiracy),306 (abetment of suicide) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace).

Jhansi SSP Vinod Kumar Dohre said the case has been lodged under Section 306 of the IPC in spite of the fact that Lakshman did not commit suicide and died of high fever. “There was no other IPC section applicable for the allegations levelled by the complainant. The investigation will find out if the allegations are true,” he added.
