A team of UP Police on Friday arrested builder Fahad Yazdani from Nainital, Uttarakhand, in connection with fraud and cheating cases filed against him in Lucknow. Fahad is also booked in a case lodged in connection with the collapse of a building in Lucknow in January that left three women dead and several others injured. Yazdani was on the run since then.

Following the collapse of the four-storey Alaya Apartment in posh Hazratganj area of Lucknow, police had arrested Samajwadi Party MLA Shahid Manzoor’s son Nawazish Shahid and nephew Mohammad Tariq. Both are reported to be the owners of the building.

The FIR against them was lodged under IPC sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 323 (causing hurt), 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy). “In connection with building collapse case, Fahad had obtained arrest stay. We have arrested him in two fraud cases,” said ACP, Hazratganj, Arvind Kumar Verma.

A police officer said, Fahad was accused in fraud case of duping victim by allegedly taking money and not giving flat.
Station House Officer (Hazratganj) Pramod Kumar Pandey said a non-bailable warrant was pending against Fahad Yazdani. “On the basis of tip off, police team went to Nainital and arrested Fahad,” said Pandey.

After Yazdani was booked in building demolition, he posted a video on social media, claiming he had no link with the construction of Alaya Apartments. “… I have been defamed in connection with this incident… I have spoken to people living in the neighbourhood. Yazdani Builders have no connection with the building… I found that Shahid Manzoor’s son and nephew also have no link with the building. They sold flats. They are also not responsible for the incident,” he said in the video.

Following the building collapse, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had ordered a probe by a three-member committee. The deceased were identified as Begum Haidar (72), mother of Samajwadi Party spokesperson Abbas Haidar, and his wife, Uzma Haidar (30). At least 14 people were pulled out alive from the rubble in the 16-hour-long search and rescue operations.
