Four people, including a woman, were injured after two office bearers of the BJP’s Baghpat unit in Uttar Pradesh and their family members attacked each other with bricks and batons late on Friday night during an altercation over an alleged loan of Rs 6.5 lakh.
Both groups have lodged First Information Reports (FIRs) at the Kotwali police station in Baghpat, blaming each other for the clash, the police said.
Kuldeep Bhardwaj, the vice-president of the BJP’s Baghpat unit, claimed that his younger brother Nirankar Bhardwaj alias Titu had given Rs 6.5 lakh to the secretary of the BJP local unit, Satpal Upadhyaya, two years ago. Upadhyaya, Kuldeep claimed, was not returning the money despite repeated reminders.
“My nephew Vishal was present outside our house Friday night when Titu and his friends started abusing him without any provocation. My wife Krishna came out of the house to protect Vishal but by that time the arguments had taken a violent turn and she along with Vishal were attacked by Titu and his accomplices with bricks and lathis,” Upadhyaya claimed in the FIR.
In his FIR, Kuldeep said that Titu had gone to ask for his money but Vishal and others present there attacked him and those who tried to save him. “Titu and others received injuries in the clash. Upadhaya had refused to give Titu’s pending money to him for a long time. They have also snatched his gold chain,” Kuldeep claimed in his FIR.
“We are investigating the issue but no arrests have been made so far. The injured have been admitted to the local health centre and police deployment was made outside the residence of both leaders to ensure peace in the area,” said Dikshit Kumar Tyagi, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kotwali police station in Baghpat.
