BJP MLA Yogesh Verma was allegedly attacked and beaten during a clash at the Urban Cooperative Bank campus in the Kotwali area of Lakhimpur Kheri on Wednesday.

A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, purportedly shows the Lakhimpur Kheri MLA being assaulted by a group of people in the presence of district police and administrative officials.

Police said the incident occurred during the filing of nomination papers for the posts of the bank’s delegates and chairman.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur Kheri, Pavan Gautam said the issue had been “settled,” while an officer said the nomination process has resumed. No FIR has been lodged into the matter.

According to police, the group was led by the president of the District Bar Association, Awadhesh Singh, whose wife, Pushpa Singh, a former bank chairman, is contesting the position.

Singh allegedly confronted and physically assaulted Verma, who had arrived because his supporters were allegedly threatened by Singh’s group for filing a nomination.

Verma had accused the opposition of “rigging” the Urban Cooperative Bank elections. In the 2022 Assembly elections, Yogesh Verma defeated the Samajwadi Party candidate Utkarsh Verma.
