FIVE MEMBERS of two gurdwara management committees were booked after posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who led the Khalistan movement, and other separatists were put up in two Sikh shrines here, police said on Monday.
The Bareilly police said that posters of three persons, including Bhindranwale, were put up on Saturday at the Sikh shrines during the ongoing Balidan Diwas (Martyr’s Day) of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots being observed from June 1-6 . Images of the posters surfaced on social media platforms, after which the police took cognizance of the matter and registered an FIR in the matter on the basis of a complaint by Vaibhav Gupta, in-charge of the police post at Baradari police on Sunday. The posters were removed following police intervention.
“Whatever the authorities may believe about Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Amrik Singh and Gen Subeg Singh, for us, all three are martyrs,” claimed Malik Singh Kalra, president of the Gurdwara Shri Singh Sabha, Model Town. The other gurdwara where similar posters were put up and later removed is in Bareilly’s Janakpuri.
“A complaint was received on Sunday,” said Rahul Bhati, Additional Superintendent of Police, Bareilly city.
“The relevant IPC sections will be invoked in the FIR after we complete our probe. Those booked are Malik Singh Kalra, Gurdeep Singh Bagga,Harnam Singh, Rajendra Singh Jani and Hardeep Singh Bagga,” said Amit Pandey, in-charge of the Baradari police station.
