The construction of a building was stopped by police at Jodhapur village of Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi district after it was alleged that a mosque was being built at the site without approval from the authorities concerned, officials said.
Locals filed a complaint when the structure started resembling a mosque, they said.
The police said the landowner, Kamruddin, when questioned, denied constructing a mosque, saying a madrasa was being built there.
Bhadohi Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhimanyu Manglik said the construction was going on for over a year and the landowner had been instructed to obtain permission from the authorities concerned before resuming work.
The locals claimed that they initially believed that Kamruddin was building a house there. But when the structure started taking shape, a resident filed a complaint, alleging that the construction was being carried out without required approval.
Following the complaint, a police team visited the spot and asked Kamruddin to provide documents of permission but he failed to do so, it is learnt.
Police personnel have been deployed at the village with a predominantly non-Muslim population to avoid any untoward incident, the officials said.
