Handing over the keys of 76 houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana on the land seized from the possession of slain criminal-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday directed all the development authorities in the state to undertake similar projects on lands freed from the mafia.

Accusing the governments prior to 2017 of sheltering the mafia, Adityanath said that the new houses would send the message that the dispensation led by him stands with the poor.

Giving away the keys for houses built in the city’s Lukarganj area to low-income group individuals, the CM said, “This is the same state where the mafia used to take over the land of the poor and traders and encroached upon even government land. The poor used to be just spectators. Now, the land reclaimed from the mafia and strongmen is being used to build houses for the underprivileged. This is a message in itself.”

He further said, “Before 2017, no poor person was able to get a house in the state under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. But after the formation of the double-engine government, more than 54 lakh poor people got houses of their own.”

When Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya spoke about the need of a “good convention centre”, Adityanath said there was the need to construct such a facility in Prayagraj with the capacity of accommodating at least 10,000 people. He directed the Prayagraj Development Authority to immediately prepare a detailed project report on it.

The CM claimed that the idea of building houses on encroached land is in tune with the spirit of good governance initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi nine years ago. He informed that the state government has built housing for the poor at a cost of Rs 6.6 crore on the land freed from the mafia’s possession.
