As UP eyes social media push for its schemes, Cabinet gives nod to new digital policy

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024, prepared by the state information department.

According to the Principal Secretary, information department, Sanjay Prasad, the government has decided to list agencies/firms to give advertisement in order to promote them for making and displaying content/tweet/video/post/reels about schemes and achievements of the UP government on online platforms such as X, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.

Prasad said in the statement that the approval of the policy now would help provide employment to the residents of Uttar Pradesh living in other parts of the country and even abroad.

The department has categorised the influencers/agencies/firms into four categories on the basis of subscribers/followers,  a statement issue here on Tuesday said.

According to the category, the influencers/account holders/operators on X, Facebook and Instagram will be paid a maximum of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 4 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively per month, the policy says.

The payment for videos/shorts/podcasts on YouTube as per the category defined on the basis of the subscribers/followers will be Rs 8 lakh, Rs 7 lakh, Rs 6 lakh and

Rs 4 lakh, respectively, per month, as per the policy., the statement said.

The policy also has a provision for initiating legal action against agencies/firms if they upload any “objectionable content” on platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube. It has been made clear that the content “should not be indecent, obscene or anti-national,” the policy says.
