The Kanpur police on Sunday arrested three people, including a medical store operator and his brother, for allegedly attacking and seriously injuring a 22-year-old youth during a heated argument outside their shop, officials said.

According to police, the victim, identified as Abhijeet Singh Chandal, was assaulted with a sharp-edged weapon after a verbal altercation turned violent on Saturday night.

Police said, Abhijeet sustained deep injuries to his abdomen, hand, and head, and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kanpur, where doctors have described his condition as stable.

Cross FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident at the Rawatpur police station, police said.

The first FIR has been filed against Abhijeet Singh and three others, for allegedly creating a ruckus outside the medical shop while under the influence of alcohol. In another FIR, a medical shop operator, his brother, and two others, have been booked for assaulting Abhijeet with a sharp-edged weapon.

Rawatpur Station House Officer (SHO) Manoj Kumar Mishra said, on Sunday, the police arrested three suspects, medical shop operator Vijay Singh Chauhan (40), his younger brother Amar Singh Chauhan (32), and their associate Ashutosh Tiwari (25).

According to SHO Mishra, the medical shop operators alleged that Abhijeet Singh and his friends arrived at their shop in an inebriated state and asked for a bottle of water. When shop owner Vijay Singh refused to sell one, an argument broke out, following which Abhijeet and his companions left the spot.

Police said that a few minutes later, Abhijeet returned to the shop and this time asked for a piece of cloth to wipe his hands. When Vijay again refused, Abhijeet and his associates, who had arrived in a car, allegedly began hurling abuses and issuing threats. The argument soon escalated into a violent clash, during which both sides attacked each other. As the situation spiraled out of control, Abhijeet and his friends fled the scene, leaving their car parked outside the shop, police added.

Abhijeet, who already has two criminal cases registered against him, has been named in the latest case along with history-sheeter Saurabh Thakur. During the investigation, police recovered a pistol from the car in which Abhijeet and his associates had arrived,” said Mishra.

However, on Sunday, Abhijeet’s family filed a counter-FIR against the medical shop operators and their associates, accusing them of assaulting him without provocation. In his statement to the police, SHO Mishra said Abhijeet claimed that he had gone to the shop simply to buy a bottle of hair oil.
