In an unprecedented move, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday rejected the honorary doctorate which the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) had planned on conferring on him on the occasion of its 12th convocation on January 12.
An official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said:”Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has taken cognizance of publishing/telecast of news reports that the Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) had decided to bestow him with a doctorate and expressed his gratitude for it. He said that he had been given a similar degree in the past and keeping that in mind, taking another degree would be unfair.”
UPTU Vice-Chancellor R K Khandal said, “We can only honour people, it is up to them whether they want to accept it or not.”
On Saturday, UPTU’s academic council had approved the honorary doctorate for Akhilesh.
