In a letter to Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday sought permission for recarpeting of the Lalitpur airstrip at the state government’s expenses.

The Lalitpur Airstrip was developed on 273.7 acres during the World War II by Britishers for the Indian Army. Later, the defence ministry transferred 64.74 acres to the Director General of Civil Aviation, which was registered in revenue records in the name of state’s civil aviation department. The remaining land is lying barren.

In the past, several attempts were made by the state government to recarpet the runway but were denied permission, leaving the piece of land to be non-functional.

Akhilesh in his letter has requested the defence minister to grant a no-objection certificate (NOC) for recarpeting of Lalitpur airstrip at the state’s expense. The CM also mentioned that the land can be used by state government as well as by Army and Air Force. He added that it will lead to development of the Bundelkhand region wherein the Lalitpur airstrip is located.
