A 55-year-old woman was hacked to death in sleep by by an unidentified assailant at her house in Vikas Nagar area early on Saturday.
Police said Phoolmati had been living with her younger son Rajesh alias Sonu for the past 22 years. She was sleeping in the verandah with her grand-daughter Manju (13) when the incident took place. Rajesh and his wife had gone to his in-laws place on May 25 and were yet to return.
Phoolmatis throat was slit with a sharp-edged weapon. However,family members said Manju woke up only when the assailant was escaping from the house,police said.
An FIR for murder has been lodged against unidentified persons on the complaint of the victims elder son,Vijay Kumar Soni,who lives in Gudamba area. Vikas Nagar station officer Ashok Kumar Yadav said the family had taken the house on rent from one Kamla Devi of Barabanki. He said the family had stayed on in the house even after Kamlas death.
Soni said his family had a fight with one Bachcha Yadav of Barabanki,who claimed to have bought the house from Kamla. However,Yadav was named in his complaint to police.
