At least 23 people have been arrested in connection with a clash that took place between members of two communities over putting up a religious flag in a market of Shravasti district’s Bhinga tehsil on Saturday, police said.
The controversy started when members of the other community objected to putting up of the flag, leading to arguments and pelting of stones between the two groups.
Four people, including a woman, were injured in the clash.
“We have arrested 23 men under Section 151 (breach of peace) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in the case,” said Shravasti Additional Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar Yadav.
The police brought the situation under control by using mild force to disperse the crowd, the officials said. The injured were taken to hospital and provided with medical aid. A case was filed against 44 persons on charges of rioting, criminal intimidation, and physical assault at the Bhinga police station.
Those arrested were produced in a court that sent to judicial custody, the ASP added.
A preliminary inquiry revealed that the clash erupted when members of a community objected to the installation of a religious flag by members of the other group. An argument ensued and more people arrived followed by shouting of slogans. The situation worsened as both groups began throwing stones, some even from their rooftops, it is learnt.
