Two Banaras Hindu University (BHU) final-year students were arrested on Monday for allegedly sexually assaulting and robbing a doctor inside a hostel room. The police said the students are among the three accused arrested in the case and they are on the lookout for two more youngsters who are local residents.

The accused allegedly lured the 32-year-old doctor into a room, sexually assaulted him, recorded the entire incident and threatened to upload the footage on social media. After the incident, the accused extorted money from the doctor, the police said.

The police have now decided to invoke the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act against the accused.

According to the police, the incident took place on January 11 but the doctor only filed a first information report (FIR) on February 4 after the accused demanded more money from him. On January 11, according to the doctor who is employed at a private hospital, one of the accused called him claiming that his roommate’s health was deteriorating. When he reached the university gate, he said he was led to a hostel room where four people were already present. The doctor said he was sexually assaulted, and his gold ornaments, including a ring and a chain, were forcibly taken from him. The accused allegedly also stole his cash.

Varanasi Deputy Commissioner of Police Ram Sewak Gautam said that the arrested accused have confessed to the crime and the police plan to seek their custody for detailed questioning.

A police officer said that the accused allegedly said that they contacted the doctor through an app predominantly used by the gay community. During interrogation, the accused allegedly also revealed that they had assaulted four other doctors and a businessman in the past. No other victims have come forward so far, the officer added.

The accused have been booked under sections 377 (unnatural offences), 347 (wrongful confinement to extort property or constrain to an illegal act), 384 (extortion), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, the police said.
