At least 16 people, including 12 policemen, were injured when an unruly mob protesting against the death of a student went on a rampage in Banda district on Tuesday.
The police fired in the air and resorted to lathicharge to scatter the protesters, who had blocked traffic, torched about two dozen vehicles and indulged in heavy stone-pelting.
Trouble erupted when Sushil Kumar,a student of Satya Narain Inter College at Tindwari, was crushed to death by a speeding truck. Enraged over his death, students and locals squatted on roads demanding immediate arrest of the driver. When the police tried to disperse them, the protesters turned violent, attacking a police station and setting vehicles on fire.
While four persons, including two students, sustained injuries,12 policemen including an SP and two circle officers were hurt in the brick-batting. Additional forces, including PAC,have deployed in the trouble-torn area. The situation was tense but under control, said an official.
