Lending support to the Mamata Banerjee government, Leader of the Opposition and Congress MLA Abdul Mannan on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that the withdrawal of central forces from Darjeeling hills will put the state government in “disadvantageous position”.

“It has come in the news that central government has withdrawn substantial number of central forces from Darjeeling recently. This will put the state government in disadvantageous position. Sir, you are aware that some secessionist people with vested interest have been claiming the formation of separate state of Gorkhaland. People in the state have been fighting against the division of Bengal. It will, however, be impossible to avert the division of the state without the help and support of the central government,” Mannan wrote in the letter.

On Sunday, the Centre took a decision to withdraw 10 of the 15 companies of CAPFs deployed in Darjeeling hills. Following a call from CM Mamata Banerjee, the Centre decided to pull out only seven companies.
