A minor girl succumbed to her injuries on Monday after fighting for life for more than 10 days at a hospital following a suicide attempt in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, the police said.
The girl set herself ablaze on April 14 after she was allegedly threatened by some persons to withdraw a complaint alleging molestation and attempt to rape. She was admitted to a hospital in Siliguri.
“The girl died around 5:30am today,” said a police official.
The victim’s father has demanded a CBI probe into the circumstances leading to her death. “My daughter is no more. Her only mistake was that she had the courage to file a complaint. We want CBI probe into the case,” he told mediapersons.
The victim in her complaint to the police had said that the 25-year-old man attempted rape after molesting her when he found her alone at her house in February. When she raised an alarm, he escaped from the spot, she had said.
According to sources, the accused after securing bail allegedly started threatening the girl to withdraw her complaint. On March 13, two people went to her house and threatened to kill her and her family members following which she set herself on fire the next day, receiving more than 65 per cent burn injuries.
Four persons, including the 25-year-old who allegedly molested the girl and his brother, have been arrested in the case for abetment to suicide charges, it is learnt.
“All the four persons involved in the case have been arrested and are in jail custody,” said Jalpaiguri superintendent of police (SP) Debarshi Dutta.
