Reaching out to non-Bengali voters ahead of the crucial Bhabanipur by-election, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday promised to safeguard the community and work for the development and welfare for all.
Reminding Hindi-speaking voters how she visited Burrabazar, the trading hub for local Gujratis and Marwaris, and checked on distressed traders post demonetisation, the TMC chief said, “You saw what happened after the notebandi (demonetisation). I used to go to Burrabazar every day and talk to traders.” Banerjee has to win the September 30 bypoll to continue as CM.
The CM said, “I am not biased towards any community. Be it a Gujarati or a Marwari, or mosque or the Laxminarayan temple or a gurdwara, religion is for everyone. The BJP taunted me for going to a mosque. But I visited a gurdwara and a mandir as well.” The BJP has fielded advocate Priyanka Tibrewal against her.
At a gathering of non-Bengali voters at Uttam Udayan in Bhabanipur, the Trinamool chief said, “Sobhanda (Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay) vacated the Bhabanipur constituency for me. I am also happy to be back home in Bhabanipur.”
Targeting the BJP, she said, “The BJP is selling off the country’s assets. They are planning to sell BSNL, Air India, Indian Railways, everything. They had said Nandigram is Pakistan and are now saying the same for Bhabanipur. I love my country, my motherland.”
“You live in peace. I will protect you… We will save Bengal and in the coming days, Bengal will save our country,” she said.
