Do you feel your Uttar Bangla Bikashgami Party will be able to fight Dasmunsi?
I have nothing to be scared of. People know me and respect me. They have seen my work unlike Deepa who has not done any work here. She is banking on her husband’s work.
When I decided to float my own party I was offered a ticket by the SP,BSP,and even JDU but I decided against joining any of them.

One does not see your posters while posters of Deepa Dasmunsi and Bireswar Lahiri are everywhere in the area.
Deepa is spending over Rs 2 crore on publicity but I have no money. I never spent money on publicity,yet I have won the state election eight times.

What are the main issues of your party?
North Bengal has been neglected for years that led to movements like the Kamptapuri agitation,the demand for Greater Coochbehar and Gorkhaland. There is no industry here and even the tea industry is suffering with nearly 15 big tea estates closed. Two years ago 3,500 people died due to starvation and malnutrition in the Dooars but the government hushed it as illness.

How do you view the movements that are demanding a separate North Bengal?
Smaller parties are wary of the bigger ones. I must sit with them to make them understand that demanding a separate state is useless. Let North Bengal be a part of West Bengal but there should be a deputy chief minister designated for it. There is a North Bengal Unnayan Prashashayan Kendra with the CM as chairman. There should be a mini secretariat in the Hills since approaching officers sitting in Kolkata for work causes delays. I am not interested in dividing Bengal.

Many Muslims in Raiganj are moving towards the Congress and are planning to vote for it.
This is not true. People understand that voting for Deepa is not going to help as she will not do anything for the area. Deepa might think she has Muslim votes but they know the truth about her. The Muslims here need jobs and even the Sachar report said that the community in Bengal is the most under-developed.
I have been talking to the local DM to make Urdu the first language in Islampur sub-division as it is a Muslim majority area.
Students often face question papers in Hindi or Bengali,which are difficult for them to understand and there should be an Urdu version in the state Board examination.
