On day one of campaign,Mamata lists welfare steps taken for women

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today recounted the measures taken by her government to ensure both social and economic safety of women.

Hoping to ward off the widespread negative publicity that she has received following an increase in the cases of rape and murder against women in the state,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today recounted the measures taken by her government to ensure both social and economic safety of women.

In her first rally ahead of the rural polls,Mamata said she has asked for death penalty for those who will be convicted in the Barasat gangrape and murder case. “Women, our mothers and sisters are the assets of our society. In 27 days,we made sure justice was delivered in the Balurghat case. In the Kamduni case,we will request for death sentence. And we will do that in 30 days. During the Left Front regime, cases of rape and atrocities against women remained unlodged. Today women are coming forward with complaints, which is a good sign,’’ Mamata said.

She also claimed that she has reserved 50 per cent seats in panchayats polls for the women. “They will be empowered. If any wrong is done against them, the doer will not be spared. There will be fast track courts,’’ Mamata added.

She also discussed the Kannyashri programme (already there in the budget) for the girl students, who will get Rs 25,000 once they are promoted to class 8.

Mamata also said she did not believe in the politics of revenge. “I know people are trying to create trouble. But their mentors are sitting in Kolkata and if I wanted to,I could catch them,’’ she said.

Accusing CPM of using Trinamool flags,Mamata said they were indulging in mischievous acts and later claiming that the ruling party was behind them. “After the panchayat polls, which they will lose badly, they will run away to places like Korea and Cuba. We have dedicated the election to maa, mati and manush, and want people to vote in large numbers,’’ she said.
