Monsoon likely to enter north Bengal in 2-3 days: Met dept

The onset of the monsoon in the northeastern states is likely to bring heavy to very heavy rain in Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Mizoram during the next three days and in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh over the next five days, it said.

Heavy rain lashed parts of districts like Kolkata and North 24 Parganas on Friday bringing relief to the people from the prevailing heatwave conditions. The meteorological department said, “Heavy rain and strong winds are likely in Kolkata, Howrah, Bankura, South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur over the next few days.”

Alipore Meteorological Department stated that monsoon is likely to enter North Bengal over the next two-three days and hit south Bengal by next Thursday. “Various factors like the amount and distribution of rainfall, wind speed and moisture content in the air determine the onset of monsoon in a particular area,’ a weather official said.

Weather officials said light rainfall is likely in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur on Saturday. Sub-Himlayan districts like Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong and Alipurduar are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms on Saturday, they added. Meanwhile, the weather department has issued an orange alert for heatwave conditions in Purulia, Jhargram, West Medinipur, Bankura, West Burdwan, East Burdwan and Birbhum districts.
