Another hospital horror in Bengal, teen ‘molested’ at Kolkata’s SSKM by former staff member

35-year-old accused arrested, sent to police custody

The court, which exclusively hears POCSO cases, was hearing a case lodged against a man in 2024.The accused had been booked under the POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexually Offenders) Act.

A 15-year-old girl, who was accompanying her parents to Kolkata’s SSKM Hospital, was allegedly molested by a former staff member on Wednesday.

Police have arrested the accused, identified as Amit Mallik, 35, who is currently working as a temporary staff member at Kolkata’s Nil Ratan Sarkar Medical College and Hospital (NRS).

According to sources, Mallik, clad in the SSKM staff uniform, allegedly lured the girl into a trauma centre when her parents had gone to get an OPD ticket.

He allegedly took the girl to a bathroom and molested her. As the girl started screaming, people rushed in, while Mallik fled. He was arrested late Wednesday night from the Dhapa area.

“The investigation is on. We are looking at the CCTV footage for a timeline and also probing why the accused had come to the SSKM Hospital, where he no longer works,” said a police officer, adding Mallik has been booked under the POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.

Mallik was produced before a court on Wednesday and was sent to police custody for one day.

“We are interrogating the accused. The medical examination of the girl will also be conducted,” said the police officer.

According to hospital sources, Mallik was expelled from the SSKM Hospital a few years ago.

Reacting to the incident, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said, “The law will take its own course. We all have to stand up against such incidents.”

BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar, on the other hand, alleged that the law-and-order has collapsed under the TMC government.

“The administration of the state has completely collapsed. It is shocking that such incidents are happening. The attack on women throughout the state raises serious questions about the security and safety of women. After the RG Kar rape-murder incident, the chief minister (Mamata Banerjee) had announced several measures, which she had said would be implemented in the state. In reality, nothing has been done,” the BJP leader said.

This incident comes close on the heels of a woman doctor being abused and threatened with rape at Uluberia Medical College and Hospital in Howrah district by the family members of a patient.

Last year, a junior doctor was raped and murdered by a civic volunteer at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. The accused, Sanjay Roy, was arrested and later sentenced to life imprisonment by a court.
