Alleging that the law and order situation in West Bengal has “deteriorated immensely”, senior Congress leader and former Berhampore MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to apologise to the people of Murshidabad for the communal violence that took place in the district over anti-Waqf Act protests last month.
Demanding adequate compensation for the victims of the violence – three persons were killed and over a hundred houses were damaged – Chowdhury said: “Mamata Banerjee should adequately compensate the affected families as well as provide permanent jobs. The culprits must be arrested and stringent action taken against them.”

“Also, in a state where she is the chief minister, such things should not happen. She must apologise for it. She must say sorry to the people of Murshidabad,” he added.
On Saturday, ahead of CM’s visit to Murshidabad — Chowdhury described it as “riot-tourism” — he had said: “Murshidabad has been defamed across the country because of the failure of the administration and TMC leaders. The state administration did not act responsibly at the time. And after all these days, it has occurred to the CM that she should visit the district now.”
