Mamata looks at ‘legal loophole’ for Tara takeover

Ordinance promulgated by her govt blocked by TRAI order

In order to legalise the takeover of Saradha Group-owned Tara News channel, the state government is mulling recourse to a “loophole” in the Prasar Bharati Act or TRAI order,CM Mamata Banerjee said Tuesday.

“Two months ago I promulgated an ordinance for the takeover of the channel but that has not been ratified as yet. If it is not cleared,we will look for a loophole in the law and get it passed,’’ Mamata said.

It was on May 22 that Mamata had announced the takeover of the two Saradha TV channels in the wake of the Saradha Group of companies going bust. An ordinance was promulgated and sent to the President. It was, however, blocked by a TRAI order of December last year, which disallows a state government to run a TV channel.

The CM made the announcement at the centenary celebrations of Dainik Basumati,a Bengali newspaper, which is now a state government-owned PSU.

The vernacular, founded by Upendranath Mukherjee,a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, was closed in the 1990s by the then Left Front government. Mamata also spelt out her plans to revive Basumati. “We will see how the publication division can be revived and I have plans to get Paschimbanga, the state government’s organ, printed here.’’

Others who attended the function included Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra, novelists Shankar,Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay and Sanjib Chattopadhyay.
