A prisoner at Presidency Jail was found hanging in the washroom of his cell Sunday morning, the police said.

Alok Mullick, who was serving life term in the jail’s Azad ward,is alleged to have committed suicide. A resident of Ranaghat in Nadia,Mullick was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007 after he was charged in a number of cases, including murder, according to the police.

A mandatory Judicial Magistrate inquiry, too, has been initiated. Jail authorities assert that prison inmates develop such suicidal tendencies which they plan to curb. “We will soon come up with a suicide prevention team which would identify and help inmates who have gone into depression. It,however,is not an easy task to identify a handful among 2,500-odd prisoners in a correctional home. We are also in talks with the PWD for a special suicide resistance cell. Suicide, which results from a momentary impulse, can be prevented if the person gets timely help,” said Inspector General (Prisons) Ranvir Kumar.

The I-G said he had discussed this with his officers and had initiated the process of roping in some NGOs,too. “Suicidal tendency creeps into inmates owing to various reasons, ranging from a tedious trial to a long prevailing mental illness. They need to be convinced that suicide is not a way out. We will try to rope in psychiatrists who would devote a few hours every week to such patients. If that doesn’t happen,we will turn to hospitals for help,” Kumar said.

“I have been told that he was suffering from a mental illness for long,” he added.
